Ver los 600+ juguetes del catálogo →This unicorn puzzle from Goki gathers 48 pieces in their wooden frame: a white unicorn and her foal, waterfalls, a rainbow and a castle. A unicorn jigsaw puzzle for ages 3+, done with an adult at first, then alone.
Ref. : REFG57366
Across the 48 pieces, a large white unicorn with a pink and mauve mane gallops through a meadow full of flowers, her foal at her side. Behind them, turquoise waterfalls tumble between the rocks, a rainbow crosses a pink and golden sky, and a castle with purple turrets stands on a rocky peak. An old tree trunk covered in orange mushrooms and a few butterflies complete the picture.
Your child tips the pieces out onto the table, turns them picture side up, then puts them back one by one into the wooden frame. The frame holds the edges of the picture, so they always know where the scene starts and where it stops. That makes this unicorn puzzle easier to tackle than a loose jigsaw spread across the floor.
To place a piece, your child compares it with what surrounds the gap: a strand of pink mane, a stretch of rainbow, a blue flower. Little by little they learn to follow a detail from one piece to the next. The hand works at the same time: they pinch the piece between thumb and forefinger and turn it until it slides into its spot. Repeated for all 48 pieces of the unicorn puzzle, that movement is steady fine motor practice.
A piece in the wrong place will not fit, or leaves a break in the picture, so your child sees the mistake without an adult pointing it out. This control of error, where the material itself shows what is wrong, is one of the principles of the Montessori approach, and it is shared by all our wooden jigsaw puzzles: the shape does the correcting.
The first time, empty the frame in front of your child and turn all the pieces picture side up together. Then suggest sorting them into piles by colour: the pink sky, the turquoise water, the green grass, the white of the unicorns. Each pile becomes a small puzzle of its own, and sorting is what makes a 48-piece puzzle manageable for a young child.
The usual mistake is to place the piece yourself as soon as they hesitate. Point instead to a piece already in the frame that must touch the one they are looking for, and let them find it. Once they finish the unicorn puzzle without help, vary the game: hunt for one detail first (the butterflies, the castle), or start from a corner they choose.
A unicorn jigsaw puzzle for 3 year olds is a puzzle for two: you sort the pieces, they place them. At 4, children often work in two stages, laying the big areas alone (the unicorns and the meadow) and asking for a hand with the sky, where the pink pieces look alike. Among jigsaws for 5 year olds, it is one they more readily finish on their own. With jigsaws for 6 year olds, the challenge shifts: finishing faster, or starting from the castle rather than the edges. When the 48 pieces hold no more surprises, a 100-piece unicorn puzzle can take over.
Wipe the wood with a barely damp cloth and never soak it. Putting the 48 pieces back in their frame after each game means none go missing.
The setting of these unicorn puzzles is imaginary. For the youngest children, Montessori materials favour pictures taken from real life: animals, plants, everyday objects. This wooden unicorn puzzle is for the child who already loves unicorns and fairy tales, and whom the theme carries through to the last piece. As a rainbow unicorn puzzle, it also gives older children plenty of small details to hunt for: mushrooms, butterflies, purple turrets.
The scene suits a girl of 3 as much as a boy fascinated by castles. Our fantasy and fairytale toys carry the story further, and the selection of toys for 5 and 6 year olds gathers other ideas for when the puzzle is mastered.
Goki recommends this one from 3 years. At that age it is done with an adult; children manage it alone later, once they can sort the pieces by colour.
Do it together: you sort the pieces by colour, they place them. Start with the two unicorns, which are easy to recognise, then let them fill in around them.
It marks the edges of the picture and holds the pieces once placed, so the scene does not come apart at the slightest knock, and your child can carry the finished puzzle flat to show it off.
Warning: Not suitable for children under 3 years.
